Rugby Union results from the second round of the 2011 Super Rugby Tournament

There were plenty of upsets and close games in the second round of the 2011 Super Rugby tournament. The Highlanders made it two from two with a second half comeback against the Chiefs. Just when many were picking the Melbourne Rebels to go through the season without winning a match, they held out the Brumbies for a win in their second ever Super Rugby game. Perhaps it was the Waratahs making the rebels look worse than they were last week, because the Waratahs embarrassed another Australian team …

There are few potential blow outs this weekend, with the Brumbies taking on the less-than-promising Rebels, the Bulls playing the Cheetahs and potentially the Lions against the Stormers, although the Lions may back up from their positive showing against the Bulls in round one.

The conference system means more local derbies between the teams, and the first round alone provided grudge matches between the Hurricanes and Highlanders, Blues and Crusaders, Lions and Bulls, and a ‘warm’ welcome to Super Rugby from the Waratahs to the Rebels.

It was a typical start to Super Rugby, some poor defense, patchy handling and attack patterns, and much talk about the merits, or lack thereof, of rugby in …

The first round of Super Rugby starts this week. This year Super Rugby welcomes the Melbourne Rebels, taking the total number of teams to 15. At the end of the season the top team from each conference advance to a six team finals series. The next three teams with highest season points also advance. Conference teams play each other twice, home and away. They also play four other teams from the…
