Super Rugby Results and Highlights Round One 2012

The first round of the 2012 Super Rugby tournament kicked off this weekend, a tournament that will be the longest in the competition’s history. Building from last year’s inaugural attempt at a conference format, this year each team will play teams in their conferences twice and each team in the other conferences once. For the first time ever the Super Rugby competition will break for internationals. The final is set to be played on the 4th of August.

A feature of the opening round’s games was the closeness of the scorelines. Only the Stormers v Hurricanes match was decided by more than four points. The Waratahs v Reds game was decided by a coach-killing score at the death by Reds winger Dom Shipperley, who ran away with the game from the halfway line. The Blues v Crusaders also came down to the wire after Blues replacement flyhalf Piri Weepu had a drop kick deflected off the fingertips of Crusaders’ wing Israel Dagg after the final hooter.

For the Chiefs, it was a case of the coaches may change but the outcome remains the same. Not only did they lose at home, but they left many key players in the casualty ward. Key players Brendan Leonard, Leila Masaga, Ben Afeaki and Toby Smith will all spend considerable time on the sidelines. It is ironic considering the Highlanders were the one that limped into the match, barely able to string a team together yet were able to emerge in a much better state than their opponents. The game was resuced to uncontested scrums in the final minutes, with two of the Chiefs props having been injured.

Other than those matches, it was a good weekend for the home teams, with hosts Brumbies, Bulls, Stormers and Lions all pleasing their home fans with a victory as well as staying true to the pre-match odds.
