Super Rugby Results and Highlights Round 6

At last a round in the 2012 Super Rugby competition where the results largely went to script. Close games have become a hallmark of this year’s competition. However, in round 6 we finally begin to see some blow outs in the score lines. Although, some of the games were closer than the margins would suggest as a couple of them finished on the back of a dominant second half by the victor. The Highlanders and Rebels were drawn at 12 all at half time, but the Highlanders put on 31 unanswered points in one of the most dominant halves in the competition this year. Likewise, the Chiefs were only up by three points at half time against the halftime, and were far from the dominant team. However, they let loose in the second half to win by seventeen points. As expected the Sharks and Stormers eventually triumphed against the Brumbies and Cheetahs respectively.

The upset of the round was in the Hurricanes versus Cheetahs try-fest. Despite being up by 21 points at one stage, the Hurricanes showed their inexperience to finally lose by nine points in an electric game of rugby. It was an upset that the Cheetahs have been threatening for some time, and it will unlikely be their last due to their attacking, 80 minute brand of football. It was also a capitulation the Hurricanes have been threatening for sometime as some surprising victories may have offered a false dawn for the rebuilding team.

The Force versus Reds could also challenge that match for upset of the round, especially considering the manner in which the Reds were thrashed. The Reds were coming off a miserable road trip and are still struggling desperately with injuries. The Australian conference remains difficult to get a read on. However, in previous incarnations of Super Rugby the sixth round would represent the half way point of the competition, in 2012 there is still months of Rugby to go.

Due to the guaranteed promotion of at least one team from each conference, the current top six standings are: Stormers (24), Highlanders (22), Brumbies (18), Chiefs (22), Bulls (20), Crusaders (18)
