Springboks v Wallabies Score and Highlights from Durban

Springboks 9 v Wallabies 14

The Wallabies overcame a first half deficit and the most experienced Springbok side in history to upset the South Africans in Durban. In a messy game, the solitary try by Australia’s Pat McCabe proved to be the difference. James O’Connor overcame the kicking jitters he had against the All Blacks to slot three penalties. This was matched by South Africa, who kicked three also, one long range effort from Francois Steyn and two to returning flyhalf Butch James.

Replacements and perhaps a lack of match fitness caught up with the Springboks in the second half, and the Wallabies pounced on the opportunity. There was also the rare sight of a Wallaby scrum demolishing a Springbok scrum. Australia’s dangerous backs can take some of the credit, because the presence intimidated the Springbok loose forwards to detach early, anticipating the Wallaby attack.

Stephen Moore was particularly impressive in the test, and Nathan Sharpe has likely booked his Rugby World Cup ticket to New Zealand from his efforts.

South Africa look to have lost Francois Steyn and captain John Smit to injury. Smit’s injury may prove a short term solution for the ‘Boks, as it solves the conundrum of what to do with impressive hooker, Bismarck du Plessis, who will surely start in his absence.

The Wallabies now have a week off, while the Springboks must regroup in anticipation of the All Black test this weekend. The All Blacks have brought a much weakened team to South Africa, and the South Africans will be much better for the run against the Wallabies. However, they will be hoping they can bounce back mentally before they risk losing their fourth test on the trot.

South Africa:

Penalties: Francois Steyn 1, Butch James 2

Australia:

Try: Pat McCabe
Penalties: James O’Connor 3
