Super Rugby 2012 returns after a three week break! For the first time in its history Super Rugby took a break for International rugby. Such is the awkwardness of the change, that it’s either round 16 or 19 depending on which rugby draw you look at.
To ease us back in gently there are three teams on a bye, so there are only six games of Super Rugby this weekend. However, there are also a number of juicy local derbies to hit the ground running. Unfortunately, some of the local derbies are against bottom of the table teams, but that’s always exciting when local teams try and ruin it for their neighbours with an upset.
Stay tuned to the New Zealand conference this weekend. New Zealand still has four teams fighting for playoff spots, and all four play each other this weekend. The Highlanders need to beat the top of the table Chiefs to stay in the hunt, just as the Hurricanes need to defeat the storming Crusaders.
It will be interesting to see what effect the three weeks off has on the teams. At the very least many of the team come back with a number of injury concerns from either the international matches or the friendly games the franchises organised.
