An exciting round is in store for Super Rugby fans in round 10 of the 2012 Super Rugby Competition. This will be an emotional week for the Australian and New Zealand Super Rugby teams, with many focusing on ANZAC remembrance following ANZAC Day on Wednesday. Fittingly, the round kicks off with a cross-Tasman clash between the Blues and the Reds at Eden Park. Following the round 7 defeat by the Rebels, it has been RugbyFix policy not to pick the Blues to win matches. Against its better judgement, we’ve picked the Blues to finally notch their second win of the year. We are already regretting this decision.
Many, including us expected the Brumbies’ South Africa tour to correct their place at the top of the Australian conference. However, the Brumbies showed what they are capable of in a losing performance against the Bulls last weekend. They scored 5 tries to 2 and can rightfully feel aggrieved after the referees missed a comically forward knock-on, which the Bulls scored from. If they can put that disappointment behind them, they should be too strong for the Lions.
The Hurricanes lie in wait while the Chiefs return home, battered from a victorious road trip. Under normal conditions the Chiefs of 2012 should be too structured and disciplined for the Canes to be able to split them open with their trademark counter-attack. The travel factor leaves a question mark, but we have showed the faith in the Chiefs we should have showed last week.
The upset of the round may very well come in the Highlanders v Cheetahs game, although most Super Rugby fans will know not to be surprised by the Cheetahs. It is around this time that the Highlanders fell over last year, but this season they seem to be made of sterner stuff. Still, the travel factor and the form of the Cheetahs this year tips it in the Cheetah’s favour.
Finally, the Crusaders clicked into gear last week against the Hurricanes and looked ominous. The Waratahs aren’t likely to let the Crusaders get to a 31-nil lead, but are unlikely to be able to completely contain them, even at home.
