Round Two Super Rugby 2011 Results

Rugby Union results from the second round of the 2011 Super Rugby Tournament

There were plenty of upsets and close games in the second round of the 2011 Super Rugby tournament. The Highlanders made it two from two with a second half comeback against the Chiefs. Just when many were picking the Melbourne Rebels to go through the season without winning a match, they held out the Brumbies for a win in their second ever Super Rugby game. Perhaps it was the Waratahs making the rebels look worse than they were last week, because the Waratahs embarrassed another Australian team this week, this time it was last year’s Cinderella team, the Reds, who were put to the sword.

In South Africa, the Bulls were given another fright, but still held on for the win against the Cheetahs after having to do the same against the Lions in round one. It was a costly loss for the Cheetahs, with inspirational captain Juan Smith being ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a torn Achilles. His World Cup chances are now in serious doubt. The Blues showed the effects of a tough travel schedule and possibly a hangover from last week’s victory against the Crusaders. The Stormers opened their 2011 Super Rugby season with a narrow three point victory over the Lions.

All Super Rugby teams wore red and black arm bands this week as a show of support for the Crusaders and the people of Christchurch who are in the midst of what is most likely the worst disaster in New Zealand’s history, the Christchurch earthquake. The game between the Crusaders and the Hurricanes was cancelled due to the quake, with both teams receiving two points, the equivalent of a draw.
