Round Three Super Rugby 2011 Results and Highlights

Rugby Union results from the third round of the 2011 Super Rugby Tournament

The third week of the 2011 Super Rugby tournament leaves three teams still undefeated, with the Sharks and Highlanders having won 3 from 3 and the Stormers having won 2 from two since their bye in the first round. The Highlanders’ record in particular will have turned heads, with very few pundits expecting them to win any of their first three games.

Meanwhile, the Crusaders enjoyed an emotional win over the form team so far in 2011, the Waratahs. The desperate Chiefs won their first game of the season, in fact their first win since May last year. It follows a dismal 2010 season where they didn’t win a single game at home. The victory against the Rebels was the first victory Super Rugby victory at Waikato Stadium since their semi final victory in 2009. Needless to say, these statistics were reflected in a very low fan turn out.

The Blues got their season back on track with a victory over 2011 battlers, the Lions. The Friend-less Brumbies succumbed to the Reds 31 to 25. Earlier that week the Brumbies had sacked their coach Andy Friend just two rounds into the season.

A penalty fest broke out at Cape Town between the Stormers and the Cheetahs. No less than 12 penalties were kicked, with no other scoring taking place in the game. The Stormers won 21 to 15. A red card in the 17th minute to the Force’s Rory Sidey effectively ended the Force, Sharks game as a contest. The Sharks ran in five tries, winning 39 to 12.
