Round 5 Six Nations Results: England Win 2011 Six Nations, Ireland Fourth in IRB World Rankings

Rugby results from the fifth round of the Six Nations tournament

England have won the 2011 Six Nations but were stopped short of completing their Grand Slam by a fired up Ireland. It was England’s first Six Nations victory since 2003, which will have the rugby union world anxiously looking at their history books as that was also the year England won the World Cup. However, that will be tempered by a less than impressive display in their final match of the Six Nations test.

In other matches Scotland handed the 2011 Six Nations wooden spoon to Italy at Murrayfield. Italy were unable to kick on from the record breaking victory over France last week, and succumbed to Scotland 21 to 8. France bounced back from their loss, defeating Wales 28 to 9 at Paris. The results mean that France comes second, Ireland third and Wales fourth due to points’ differential, but all finished on six points. Scotland and Italy finish with just two points after securing one victory each.

The victory by Ireland allowed them to leapfrog England into fourth place in the IRB World Rankings, behind the Southern Hemisphere Tri Nations teams. England are now fourth and France move up from sixth to fifth. Wales, Scotland and Italy all keep their old positions of seventh, ninth and 12th respectively.
