Henry slams want-away All Blacks

New Zealand head coach Graham Henry has criticised New Zealand based players who have opted to move overseas after being lured by lucrative contracts – at the expense of their place in the national side.

Recently, veteran hooker Keven Mealamu committed his future to the national side after signing a contract extension with Super Rugby franchise the Blues and the NZRU, but Henry admitted he was “irritated” by younger players on the fringe of the national squad who forsake their chance to wear the All Black shirt for money, and believes younger players have time to play abroad once they have played for New Zealand.

“It irritates me that guys (just) under the All Blacks group who have a dream of being an All Black for 25 years all of a sudden get offered $500 000 and bugger off” he said.

They don’t carry on and fulfil the dream. There’s plenty of time to do all of that other stuff (play abroad). There are guys I know who’ve gone overseas who’ve regretted it immensely. Often it’s (the result of) their partner’s pressure, they want to do an OE (overseas experience).”

“They get over there and they think, ‘Oh … it’s not so nice over here after all.’ The grass is not always greener.” He added.

While international players such as Meelamu and fellow forward Tony Woodcock have pledged to stay in the country, other stars such as Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and Sonny Bill Williams are rumoured to be the target for European clubs, while Williams is also being lined up for a return to rugby league, and have yet to decide on their future.

McCaw is said to be close to signing on the dotted line with the NZRU, while Carter and Williams future is not so clear despite Williams indicating he would stay in the sport after signing a deal with the NZRU’s chief sponsor Adidas, earlier this year. Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder is keen to see future of all three Crusaders Shirt wearers resolved.

“Obviously, we are doing our very best to re-contract them,” he said. I think they just need a little bit of time to make the right one.” He commented.

“They are important and they have a lot to think about and I would hate them to rush into anything without considering all the options. The sooner they make a decision, the easier it will be. There will be less speculation and they can just get on with doing the job on hand.”
